After ruining Flanders' bible study group with a little innocent naked slip-and-slide, Reverend Lovejoy encouraged Ned to invite Homer and family to the holy land, Israel, to try and save our favorite buffoon's soul. Upon arriving, we met Jacob, and the rest of the crew on the trip, that included Dr. Hibbert and Krusty the Klown, provided plenty of laughs. Some of my favorite highlights from this episode which poked fun at all religions were:
- Bart's offensive, yet hilarious line after reading papers shoved in the Wailing Wall: "Reading prayers and ignoring them, just like God."
- Krusty, upon discovering there's no Hell in Judaism, heads to "The Gaza Strip Club."
- Bart telling the Israeli girl she doesn't find like a girl, or even a Milhouse. "I don't know what is Milhouse?"
- Homer calling a camel, "a sand horse, car of the desert"
- Homer ordering a falafel with pepperoni, sausage and extra cheese.
"Some of us don't eat pork, some of us don't eat shellfish, but we all of us love chicken."
Some more of my favorite quotes from this episode were:
Ned: Our bible study group is going to the holy land next month. I'd like to take you and your family along as my guests.
Homer: Hmm, let me think. Take my family to a war zone on a bus filled with religious lameos in a country with no pork in a desert with no casinos. Where do I sign up?
Marge: Homer, I can hear your sarcasm from inside the house and the dishwasher is on
And……
Marge: Homie, you're alive.
Homer: I am more than alive, woman. I am the chosen one, who shall unite all the faiths of the holy land. I am the messiah.
Marge: But you still have the passports right?
Homer: Oh yeah, gotta keep track of those. THE MESSIAH! has the passports.
These are some great quotes. I picked out many of these as well and definitely got a laugh out of them. They made references to so many different religions in this episode, and poked fun at them, but the entire episode really showed how almost everyone has some form of religion that they follow. I thought it was funny when Homer was giving his speech "as the Messiah" and proclaimed that he wanted to unite people as "Chrismujews" because they all believe in a higher power. I felt it showed his lack of knowledge about religion and the differences between them. Overall I thought it was a funny episode and important because so many people support some type of religion.
ReplyDeleteI too like the quotes you provided from the episode. I think the quote that Kaleite provided about "Chrismujews" is a very interesting one. I agree that Homer has a lack of knowledge, but at the same time his lack of knowledge could help fix the worlds problems today. Too many people over think their religion causing conflict and anger. A simple minded person can still have brilliant ideas.
ReplyDeleteThis episode did have a lot of good moments. I just wish it was easier to understand what the tour guide was saying. I like Sacha Baron Cohen but he could have done the voice more clearly. It was funny though when he was comparing the neighboring countries of Israel and America. I agree the part of Homer deciding not to go was really funny, along with everyone being united by chicken. Everyone has things in common yet we still fight.
ReplyDeleteI like how you incorporated dialogue from the episode. This was an episode that delt with a somewhat racy topic although was still written with a sense of humor. Fun was poked at all religions even some cultures. The quotes you picked showed Homer's ignorance towards religion that was apparent throughout the episode. I also agree with Lisa in that it was at some points difficult to understand or even hear the voice of the tour guide.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this episode did deal with a somewhat racy topic. The writers did a great job in incorporating quotes that also made the episode very comical. I also found it funny how they stereotyped Homer as having "Jerusalem Syndrome" which i can imagine some people in a sense take on after having a religious experience in Jerusalem.
ReplyDeleteI liked how you layed out some of the dialogue and the quotes for this episode. It brings me right back to the funny portions and what ultimately made me laugh. I always try to remember the funny parts to be able to add them into my blog and often times i forget. Good job a highlighting them out!
